Earlier Report Observations

The market for dried shelled legumes in Bhutan expanded from 9 336 t in 2018 to a peak of 10 583 t in 2020. During this period, the country was strengthening its imported food control system through the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority and customs, which affected the regulation of food imports including dried vegetables.

Market volume dropped sharply by 25% to 7 869 t in 2021, primarily due to a contraction in domestic production. It rebounded to 8 285 t in 2022, supported by increasing consumer demand and health consciousness, which boosted consumption of vegetables. However, volume declined again to 7 768 t in 2023.

Bhutan continues to rely on imports for a significant portion of its dried leguminous vegetables. National policies promoting food sovereignty and organic farming, including the use of leguminous cover crops to improve soil fertility, are influencing the agricultural sector.
