Earlier Report Observations

In 2019, production of dried shelled legumes in Guatemala fell sharply to 389.7 thousand tons from 618.5 thousand tons the previous year, while market volume dropped from 633.8 thousand tons to 400.3 thousand tons. This decline was primarily due to adverse climate conditions, such as drought in some regions, which affected agricultural output. During this period, the Ministry of Agriculture (MAGA) promoted legumes as a key food security crop, providing technical support and genetic improvement of beans through the Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (ICTA).

After 2019, production fluctuated, reaching 385.4 thousand tons in 2023, with market volume growing to 416.7 thousand tons. The increase in 2023 was driven by a MAGA program that trained producers and distributed improved seeds, strengthening national production. At the same time, rising international demand for Guatemalan legumes, with new market opportunities identified by the Exporters Association (Agexport), stimulated export growth and supply chain strengthening.

Imports of dried shelled legumes rose from 15.8 thousand tons in 2018 to 43.4 thousand tons in 2024, indicating growing reliance on foreign supply. In 2024, a new regulation was implemented to streamline administrative procedures in the agricultural sector, which may improve integration. External factors such as logistical issues in the Panama Canal and inflation changes in supplier countries impacted food costs in Guatemala.
