Earlier Report Observations

After reaching 174.9 thousand tons in 2018, the production and market volume of dried shelled cow peas in Sudan declined over the next two years, falling to 148.2 thousand tons in 2020. This downward trend reversed in 2021, with output rising to 164.8 thousand tons and further to 183.6 thousand tons in 2022, before a modest contraction to 176.7 thousand tons in 2023. The domestic market followed the same pattern, as imports were negligible and exports remained minimal.

The recovery and growth observed in 2021 and 2022 were supported by sustained government backing for national irrigation projects like Rahad and Gezira, which included cow peas cultivation. The introduction of new, higher-yielding varieties, such as the Gbish cultivar for rainfed areas, which outperformed traditional types by up to 20.7%, also enhanced productivity. Furthermore, monetary and fiscal policy coordination between the Central Bank of Sudan and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning helped stabilize the currency, reducing production and export costs.

Despite ongoing state support for agricultural projects and the continued development of improved crop varieties, production contracted in 2019 and 2020. The market then experienced a slight downturn in 2023.
