Ghana's dried shelled cow peas market began the period with growth in 2018, driven by the revived National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO). After resuming operations in 2017, NAFCO purchased 1 230 tonnes of cowpeas in 2018 to supply the Free Senior High School Programme, providing farmers with a reliable outlet and stimulating market activity.

Market volume increased steadily to 256.7 thousand tonnes by 2020, then jumped sharply to 306.5 thousand tonnes in 2021—a rise of nearly 20%. Growth continued in 2022, reaching 320.5 thousand tonnes, before a modest contraction to 309.3 thousand tonnes in 2023.

In 2024, local agricultural reports from the Ada West District highlighted sunny weather, nine registered agro-input outlets, and no major disease outbreaks—conditions that typically favour cow pea cultivation and could support production volumes.
