Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for dried shelled broad and horse beans in Spain experienced significant shifts. Initial local production was supported by sowing practices from September to March, allowing for extended harvest periods. However, domestic output fell in 2019, while imports surged, lifting the total market volume to 50 600 t. In 2020, a collapse in imports drove the market down to 29 298 t, even as production recovered and consumer demand for fresh, tender beans remained a key feature of the spring season.

From 2021 onward, the market gradually recovered. The availability of specific bean varieties for winter and spring harvests aided farmers in production planning. By 2023, emphasis on autumn and winter sowing, combined with pest control measures, contributed to a rise in domestic production to 27 570 t. This increase, alongside steady imports, pushed the market volume to 40 371 t in 2023.
