Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for dried shelled broad and horse beans in Eastern Europe showed considerable swings. It began at 108.4 thousand tons in 2018, then fell sharply to 75.4 thousand tons in 2019. A recovery to 88.1 thousand tons followed in 2020, supported by a regulatory change that simplified market access for legumes used in animal feed after the government temporarily waived mandatory state registration for GMO products until January 2021.
Market size moved within a narrower band from 2021 to 2023. It dipped slightly to 86.7 thousand tons in 2021, then rose to 100.0 thousand tons in 2022 amid continued state support and an expansion of cultivation areas for legume crops driven by favorable prices and global demand. The volume retreated to 91.7 thousand tons in 2023.
In 2024, import volumes dropped to 2.1 thousand tons while exports reached 18.4 thousand tons. During the year, the government implemented import quotas on agricultural seeds, including legumes, from January to December 2024, a measure designed to encourage domestic production within the sector.
