Earlier Report Observations

The Russian market for dog and cat food grew from 820 тыс. т in 2018 to 958 тыс. т in 2019, supported by an increasing pet population and the launch of a new wet food production plant in Mordovia with state backing. However, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a temporary contraction to 849 тыс. т in 2020, while simultaneously accelerating a shift to online sales channels and import substitution as disruptions made domestic production more attractive.

Market volume recovered to 991 тыс. т in 2021, driven by the continued expansion of domestic manufacturing, which involved over 190 producers, and the introduction of private-label brands by major retail chains. In 2022, the market reached 1 028 тыс. т despite sanctions that cut imports by 28%, as new production capacities from companies like AO 'Limkorm Petfood' were launched and local brands expanded their presence.

In the following years, import volumes continued to decline, falling to 45 тыс. т in 2024, which solidified the share of domestic products to 98% of the market. Consumer demand increasingly favored functional and premium segments, including feeds with probiotics, while the exit of foreign investment was marked by Nestlé's cancellation of a plant project in Novosibirsk, and local players introduced new brands like 'SharaFood'.
