Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the Asian desiccated coconut market volume expanded from 166.7 thousand tonnes to 207.0 thousand tonnes. This growth was underpinned by government support for export-oriented production in the Philippines and India, which bolstered overall supply. In 2019, Sri Lanka reported a 5.2% year-on-year increase in desiccated coconut output, further contributing to regional availability. When climate and pest issues constrained Sri Lankan production in 2020, heightened import volumes helped sustain the market size.

Market volume then fell to 175.9 thousand tonnes in 2021 as key producing countries prioritized exports. The Philippines saw desiccated coconut exports grow significantly, driven by the expansion of major processors like Axelum. A strong recovery followed in 2022, with volume reaching 218.4 thousand tonnes. This rebound was fueled by record coconut production in Sri Lanka due to favorable weather and by tax incentives for desiccated coconut projects in the Philippines. However, severe drought in Sri Lanka caused a sharp drop in coconut output in 2023, pulling the market volume down to 159.2 thousand tonnes.
