The Kazakh market for fresh cucumbers and gherkins expanded steadily from 2018 to 2021, with volume rising from 466.6 thousand tons to 584.1 thousand tons. This growth was primarily driven by continued state subsidies under the 2017-2021 agro-industrial development program, which encouraged greenhouse vegetable production and attracted new entrants to the market. The introduction of mandatory food labeling in 2018 also supported market formalization.

Market volume peaked in 2021 and then experienced a moderate contraction, declining to 578.2 thousand tons in 2022 and 558.1 thousand tons in 2023. During this period, cucumbers were included in the list of socially significant goods subject to state price controls, and labeling requirements were extended. Many greenhouse operations diversified from tomatoes to cucumbers, altering the production structure amid the overall dip in output.

Looking ahead to 2024, government support for greenhouse projects remains active, and authorities are preparing to further expand digital labeling rules by 2025-2026. Cucumbers continue to be regulated under price supervision as a socially important product.
