Following a slight stabilization around 1 650 thousand tonnes in 2021, the market volume continued its upward trend, reaching 1 710 thousand tonnes by 2023. India's emergence as the world's largest exporter of cucumbers and gherkins in 2021 attracted new companies into production and processing. The industry's focus on obtaining international certifications and integrating modern technology and automation in 2022 enhanced plant efficiency and scaled up output. By 2023, negotiations for a fresh trade deal with the European Union promised wider market access, while U.S. tariffs on Indian gherkins were expected to dampen exports to that destination, though increased EU demand helped sustain overall market growth.

India's production of cucumbers and gherkins grew for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 1 656 thousand tonnes, marking a 4.3% year-on-year increase. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 45.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 13.2%.
