The market volume for cucumbers and gherkins in Bangladesh grew consistently from 113.0 thousand tons in 2018 to 180.3 thousand tons in 2023, representing an overall increase of nearly 60%. The most pronounced expansion occurred in 2021, when the market added 26.4 thousand tons, a jump of over 20% from the previous year. Growth continued in the following years, though at a slightly moderated pace in 2022 before accelerating again in 2023.

A key regulatory development took effect at the end of 2023, as the government included fresh cucumbers and gherkins in a zero VAT rate policy from 1 December 2023 to 31 May 2024. By removing the value-added tax on these basic vegetables, the measure aimed to lower consumer prices and enhance affordability, potentially stimulating domestic consumption. This policy environment was maintained into 2024.

Bangladesh's production of cucumbers and gherkins has increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 130.3 thousand tonnes, showing a modest 9.3% rise compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 7.4%, which translates to an average annual increase of 2.4%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 113.0 thousand tonnes, marking the largest decline of 6.8% during this timeframe.

From 2017 to 2020, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Belarus were the main markets for Bangladesh's cucumber and gherkin exports by volume. Qatar accounted for 53.7% of exports, the UAE for 9.9%, and Belarus for 9.8%. Together, these three countries represented 73.4% of total export flows.
