Earlier Report Observations

The cottonseed oil market in Southern Europe expanded from 48 693 t in 2018 to 61 538 t in 2020. During this period, consumer awareness of its health benefits, such as high unsaturated fatty acid and vitamin E content, began to increase, setting the stage for future growth.

After a slight stabilization around 60 552 t in 2021, the market volume surged to 70 365 t in 2022. This sharp rise was driven by regulatory changes in the European Union and Spain that explicitly authorized the manufacture and sale of cottonseed oil, provided it met specific hygienic and physicochemical standards. Concurrently, growing consumer preference for healthy oils and the expansion into cosmetics and animal feed segments further stimulated demand.

In 2023, the market contracted to 54 964 t. This decline coincided with the resumption of vegetable oil exports from the Black Sea region, which increased overall supply and altered competitive dynamics in Europe. Throughout the period, the industry saw continued technological investments in extraction and refining, along with the entry of new players responding to health and quality trends.
