Earlier Report Observations

Cottonseed oil production in Pakistan began the period at a high level of 389 thousand tons in 2018, supported by the crop's dominant share in domestic oilseed production, fulfilling a significant portion of edible oil demand. A multi-year decline followed, with global supply chain disruptions in 2020 affecting availability and cost, and severe floods in 2021 directly damaging cotton crops and reducing seed supply for oil processing.

After reaching a low of 175 thousand tons in 2022, production rebounded to 213 thousand tons in 2023. This recovery was driven by the alleviation of previous flood-related constraints and an expansion in oilseed cultivation area. Government amendments to biosafety rules in early 2024 introduced new regulations for genetically engineered crop imports, which may influence future raw material supply for the sector.
