Earlier Report Observations

Market volume of corn oil and fractions in Mozambique expanded significantly from 20 255 t in 2018 to 37 375 t in 2022. This growth was supported by regulatory measures such as the mandatory fortification of edible oil with vitamin A introduced in 2016, which standardized quality requirements and encouraged production. Government discussions from 2020 to ban crude oil imports aimed to shield domestic processors, while campaigns promoting local corn processing and the introduction of the Agricultural Market Information Service (SIMA) in 2022 improved market transparency and efficiency.

Production reached a peak in 2022 before declining to 34 349 t in 2023. The drop occurred despite ongoing efforts to boost corn yields through seed distribution programs like SUSTENTA, which increased productivity for small farmers, and the launch of a new National Food Fortification Strategy for 2023-2027. During this period, the government reinforced inspection regimes for fortified products and set a target to eliminate edible oil imports by 2024, alongside the inauguration of the JFS-SAN edible oil extraction factory in Cuamba to strengthen local manufacturing capacity.
