Earlier Report Observations

The corn oil and fractions market in Australia and New Zealand exhibited considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. Market volume peaked at 5,166 t in 2019, largely due to a sharp 42% increase in imports that year, which reached 2,539 t. Following this peak, the market contracted significantly, falling to 3,695 t in 2020 and further to 2,811 t in 2021.

A partial recovery occurred in 2022, with market volume rising to 3,199 t. This coincided with a global rise in demand for non-GMO corn oil, driven by consumer preference for natural products, and significant worldwide supply chain disruptions that led to sharply higher international prices. These conditions likely encouraged domestic production, which increased by 9.5% to 2,714 t, while imports fell as high costs made foreign supplies less attractive.

Market volume declined again in 2023 to 2,970 t. This downturn took place alongside an 18.6% contraction in global crude maize oil exports and persistently high global prices, which put pressure on local production. Output fell by 13.4% to 2,351 t, offset only slightly by a minor increase in imports.
