Earlier Report Observations
The market for coniferous wood fuel in Mexico gradually contracted between 2018 and 2023, with volume falling from 11 583 thousand m³ to 11 441 thousand m³. This decline was shaped by persistent structural barriers, including an underdeveloped domestic market for processed wood fuels like pellets and chips, insufficient infrastructure and equipment for production, and limited consumer demand due to competition from cheaper fossil fuels such as LPG and mineral coal.
Regulatory and enforcement actions directly impacted production volumes. In 2021, strengthened measures against the illicit fuel market—including the closure of sawmills and seizure of illegal wood and charcoal—reduced output. Additionally, the 2022 draft Mexican Official Standard PROY-NOM-203-SE-2020, which set formaldehyde emission limits for wood-based panels, affected related wood processing activities. Despite Mexico's position as a leading producer of coniferous wood in Latin America, these factors contributed to the steady decrease in market size.
