From 2018, coniferous wood fuel production in Eastern Africa began a gradual upward trend, supported by Kenya's National Energy Policy which emphasized biomass as a key renewable energy source. Population growth and agricultural expansion in rural areas maintained steady demand for firewood. The Energy Act of 2019 further reinforced the role of wood in the energy mix, although it did not prioritize agricultural biomass alternatives, keeping dependence on timber. By 2020, rural households adopted adaptation strategies to cope with fuelwood scarcity, contributing to a minor stabilization in output.

A significant shift occurred from 2021, when rising global energy costs prompted numerous industries in centers like Thika and Nakuru to switch from fossil fuels to wood and wood briquettes. This industrial transition became a primary driver for increased production volumes through 2022 and 2023. Concurrently, heightened concerns over deforestation led to calls for stricter forest conservation policies and sustainable management practices, shaping market discussions around balancing supply growth with environmental sustainability.

By 2024, policy focus shifted toward long-term sustainability mechanisms, including carbon pricing and commercial forestry as tools to achieve Kenya's 10% forest cover target. Promotion of energy-efficient cooking technologies aimed to reduce future wood fuel demand, while socioeconomic factors and consumer preference for convenient fuels like charcoal continued to influence market dynamics.

Coniferous wood fuel production in Eastern Africa declined following two years of growth. In 2019, production reached its peak at 10 615 thousand cubic meters, representing a 1.0% increase from the previous year. However, by 2020, output had dropped to 10 600 thousand cubic meters, showing no significant change compared to 2019.
