Concentrated or sweetened milk and cream market in Belarus

Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for concentrated or sweetened milk and cream in Belarus expanded from 301.1 thousand tons to 401.5 thousand tons. This growth was particularly pronounced in 2019, when a rise in the country's raw milk output to 7.1 million tons provided increased feedstock for processing, boosting production of these products from 513.7 thousand tons to 582.9 thousand tons. While periodic Russian import bans affected export flows, the domestic market volume grew substantially.

Market volume then contracted to 355.3 thousand tons in 2021. By 2022, it stabilized at 348.7 thousand tons. This period saw the industry adopt membrane filtration technologies for milk concentration, improving processing efficiency. Concurrent shifts in consumer preferences, including competition from plant-based alternatives, also influenced the market's structure and demand.

In 2023, the market recovered to 369.7 thousand tons. This rebound was supported by a reported 13.9% growth in dairy product sales and a significant increase in Belarus's share of Russia's dairy imports, reaching 94%, which bolstered export opportunities for concentrated and sweetened milk products.

In Belarus, production of concentrated or sweetened milk and cream grew for the third year in a row. In 2020, output reached 613.7 K t, marking a 5.3% increase from 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, production rose by 21.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.8%.

Belarus saw a second consecutive year of growth in the value of concentrated or sweetened milk and cream production. In 2020, output was valued at 1 329 M $ US, up 1.1% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 27.7%, with an 8.5% compound annual growth rate. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 966 M $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 7.1%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase at 36.1%.

After two years of decline, Belarus's exports of concentrated or sweetened milk and cream rebounded in 2020. Shipments totaled 214.8 K t, a 7.3% increase from 2019. However, over the 2017–2020 period, exports fell by 6.9%, with a compound annual decline of 2.4%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 200.3 K t, while the largest drop occurred in 2018 at 7.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Kazakhstan, and China were the top three markets for Belarus's exports of concentrated or sweetened milk and cream in volume terms, collectively accounting for 84.8% of total flows.

Belarus's export value of concentrated or sweetened milk and cream increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 465.1 M $ US, a modest 3.0% rise from 2019. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, export value decreased by 2.3%, with a compound annual decline of 0.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 402.1 M $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 15.6%. In 2019, exports posted the largest increase at 12.3%.
