Earlier Report Observations

Papua New Guinea's market for coconuts, Brazil nuts, and cashews saw production hold steady at about 1.78 million tonnes in 2018 and 2019 before falling sharply to approximately 1.18 million tonnes from 2020 onward. This decline coincided with the industry's recognition that over half of the country's coconut trees were 60-80 years old and past their peak productivity, reducing overall nut yields.

In response, the Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK) implemented its long-term strategy to revive the sector through replanting, farmer support, and diversification into higher-value goods. The push into downstream processing led to a notable rise in exports of activated carbon from coconut shells and doubled shell production for charcoal by 2022, while credit guarantees for small processors aimed to strengthen the value chain.

A 2023 survey mapped 94,000 hectares of coconut plantations, highlighting the resource base for future growth. Industry efforts remained focused on replacing aging trees, establishing local processing plants, and promoting sustainable practices, as underscored by KIK's hosting of the 2024 World Coconut Day event to foster innovation and market access.
