Earlier Report Observations
In 2018 and 2019, production of coconuts, Brazil nuts and cashews in Nicaragua remained stable at 7 200 t, while market volume edged up from 6 292 t to 6 391 t. Coconut growers faced a lack of organization and technological training, dependence on imported mother plants from the United States, and pests and diseases linked to monoculture, which together limited production expansion.
Market volume fell sharply to 4 917 t in 2020 and further to 4 642 t in 2021 as production dropped to 6 000 t. The decline coincided with broader disruptions affecting the agricultural sector during those years.
Production rebounded to 8 400 t in 2022, pushing market volume to 7 042 t and then to 7 603 t in 2023. This recovery aligned with a broader push to diversify export crops, including coconuts, stimulated by international demand and general improvements in agricultural output.
