Earlier Report Observations

The market for coconut, palm kernel or babassu oil in Pakistan contracted from 24 576 t in 2018 to 17 141 t in 2020, driven primarily by a decline in imports while domestic production held steady after a step-up in 2020.

In 2021, market volume rebounded to 20 353 t as imports surged by 93%, reflecting stronger demand for oils. The following year, the market stabilized near 20 559 t with little change.

By 2023, the market shrank sharply to 13 969 t, coinciding with a more than halving of imports. This drop occurred while a ban on genetically engineered oilseed imports remained in place, constraining supply. In early 2024, the government approved a system to resume imports of genetically modified commodities, a move aimed at boosting domestic crushing of oilseeds including palm oil, which accounts for the vast majority of Pakistan's edible oil imports.
