Earlier Report Observations

The Canadian market for cocoa shells, husks, skins, and other cocoa waste began the period at 18 295 tonnes in 2018, then contracted to 16 137 tonnes the following year. A sharp reversal occurred in 2020, with the market volume jumping to 20 755 tonnes, and growth continued strongly into 2021, reaching a peak of 26 530 tonnes.

After this peak, the market volume stabilized in 2022 at 26 379 tonnes before declining by 7% to 24 530 tonnes in 2023. This contraction coincided with a dramatic spike in global cocoa prices, which doubled from early 2023 due to extreme drought and irregular rainfall in West Africa—a key growing region. The resulting pressure on raw material costs for Canadian processors likely contributed to reduced cocoa processing activity and a lower volume of generated by-products.
