Earlier Report Observations

The African market for cocoa powder and cake experienced strong expansion from 2018 to 2023, with its physical volume growing from 37.4 thousand tons to 312.8 thousand tons. In value terms, the market increased more than tenfold, from 90 million USD to 1.047 billion USD.

This growth was supported by a steady rise in domestic production, which more than doubled to 375.4 thousand tons by 2023. Over the same period, export volumes gradually declined while imports increased, contributing to greater product availability within the region.

In 2024, record-high international cocoa bean prices, driven by severe drought in West Africa's key growing regions, alongside new European Union deforestation regulations, influenced trade dynamics. Imports rose to 70.1 thousand tons while exports fell to 104.9 thousand tons.
