Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, the cocoa beans market in South-eastern Asia experienced significant fluctuations. The market volume grew slightly to over 1.4 million tonnes in 2019, a period marked by stable export prices from Indonesia, a major regional producer. This stability was upended in 2020 when the market contracted sharply to 1.27 million tonnes. This decline coincided with a collapse in Indonesian export prices to $0.36 per kg, indicating severe market disruptions that likely constrained trade and consumption.

A recovery followed from 2021 onward as export prices rebounded to levels above $2.50 per kg. This price restoration supported a market rebound to 1.38 million tonnes in 2021. After a minor stabilization in 2022, the market volume reached its period peak of 1.45 million tonnes in 2023, reflecting a return to more stable trading conditions and sustained demand within the region.
