Earlier Report Observations

The citrus fruit market in Cyprus contracted significantly between 2018 and 2023, with total market volume falling from 126.6 thousand tonnes to 81.4 thousand tonnes and market value declining from 86.1 million US dollars to 60.2 million US dollars. This decline was primarily driven by a steady reduction in domestic production, which dropped by over a third from 147.2 thousand tonnes to 96.7 thousand tonnes over the period.

Exports of citrus fruit also decreased, from 22.8 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 18.8 thousand tonnes in 2023, while imports grew modestly from 2.3 thousand tonnes to 3.6 thousand tonnes. The increase in imports was insufficient to offset the loss in domestic output, leading to a smaller overall market supply for local consumption.

Starting from 2018, the basket of goods used to calculate the Consumer Price Index and Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices was revised based on the 2015/2016 Household Budget Survey, altering the tracking of price movements for food items including citrus. In 2024, consumer prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages, which encompass citrus fruit, recorded a notable increase, influenced by higher costs in related categories such as petroleum products and increased activity in the hospitality sector.
