From 2018 to 2023, the North Macedonian market for chocolate and cocoa products contracted by over 2 000 t, with volume falling from 8 415 t to 6 121 t. After holding steady near 8 425 t in 2019, consumption dropped sharply to 7 405 t in 2020. A partial recovery to 7 750 t occurred in 2021, but the downward trend resumed thereafter.

The market volume decreased to 6 837 t in 2022, a decline of over 10%. This contraction was influenced by rising cocoa prices from major producers Ghana and Ivory Coast, which increased production costs for chocolate manufacturers and likely reduced consumer demand. Concurrent global trends showed growing preference for specialty, vegan, and premium chocolate segments, though these shifts did not reverse the overall volume decline in North Macedonia.

North Macedonia's chocolate and cocoa products production saw a decline after two years of growth. In 2019, production reached its peak at 2,000 tonnes, but by 2020 it had fallen to 2,000 tonnes, marking an 8.5% decrease from the previous year. The most significant growth occurred in 2018, with a 7.8% increase.

In 2020, North Macedonia exported 4,660 tonnes of chocolate and cocoa products, which was a 1.8% drop from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 4.2%, averaging 1.4% annually. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 4,447 tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 4,746 tonnes, with that year also seeing the largest increase of 6.7%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 14.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.6%. Following two years of growth, chocolate and cocoa products imports into North Macedonia declined. In 2020, imports totaled 9,804 tonnes, an 8.4% decrease from 2019. The highest import volume was in 2019 at 10,700 tonnes, and the largest increase was in 2018 with a 7.2% rise.
