Earlier Report Observations

The chicken meat market volume in Seychelles declined from 4 621 t in 2018 to 4 131 t in 2020. During this period, domestic production more than doubled from 619 t to 1 008 t, but this was offset by a sharp drop in imports. In 2020, a significant decrease in import prices for fish meat, a key substitute protein, made fish more affordable, likely reducing consumer demand for chicken.

Market volume rebounded in 2021, growing by 21% to 4 999 t, and continued to expand, reaching 5 733 t in 2023. Production surged to 1 439 t in 2021 and 1 521 t in 2022 before falling to 1 095 t in 2023, while imports steadily climbed above 4 600 t by 2023. In 2024, chicken meat imports jumped to 6 383 t, coinciding with sustained global growth in chicken production and consumption, as well as relatively low commodity prices in Seychelles.
