Earlier Report Observations

The chicken meat and offal market in Eastern Africa saw its volume decline from 984 thousand tons in 2018 to 924 thousand tons in 2019 before entering a period of sustained growth. The earlier high level of production was underpinned by abundant livestock resources in Ethiopia, home to over 57 million poultry, and a growing urban population with rising affluence which increased demand.

Market volume recovered steadily after 2019, reaching 1 122 thousand tons by 2023. This expansion coincided with concerted efforts to assess and improve biosecurity practices on commercial poultry farms in Ethiopia, a move that helped bolster production efficiency and output.

By 2024, the regional market was characterized by significant modernization and shifting dynamics. In Uganda, the operation of an ISO-certified automated abattoir processing over 90 000 birds weekly indicated industry advancement, while consumer preferences shifted towards healthier, organic local chicken. Concurrently, markets faced challenges including high production costs in Kenya and increased imports of frozen chicken, prompting government scrutiny.
