Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for chicken meat and offal in Africa grew from 8.2 million tons in 2018 to 9.4 million tons in 2021, supported by increasing domestic production. After a slight contraction to 9.3 million tons in 2022, consumption rebounded to 9.5 million tons in 2023.

In 2024, chicken imports rose to 2.1 million tons, driven by increased shipments from the European Union and an active trade policy regime that managed import prices. The Poultry Sector Master Plan led to over R1.5 billion in domestic investments, boosting local production capacity. However, logistical delays at major ports and a shortage of veterinarians constrained export performance.

Consumer preference for more affordable chicken meat strengthened demand, while imports of mechanically deboned meat and offal grew by 6% and 9% respectively. The Food Safety Agency enforced quality regulations on poultry meat, maintaining standards amid these market shifts.
