Earlier Report Observations
The chestnut market in Middle Africa showed variable volume from 2018 to 2023. After an initial contraction to 148.2 tons in 2019, the market stabilized around 147.5 tons in 2020 before jumping to 160.7 tons in 2021. This peak was short-lived, as the market size then fell to 157.6 tons in 2022 and further to 152.5 tons in 2023.
Domestic production of chestnuts remained relatively flat, moving between 141.7 and 146.4 tons over the six years. In contrast, import volumes experienced significant swings, dropping from 13.1 tons in 2018 to just 4.9 tons in 2020, then surging to 14.3 tons in 2021. This import spike directly contributed to the record market volume that year.
Following the 2021 high, imports gradually declined to 8.2 tons in 2023 and continued downward to 5.4 tons in 2024. With no exports recorded, the market's fluctuations were primarily driven by changes in import levels, while domestic production provided a stable base.
