The cheese and curd market in Montenegro contracted from 26 854 t in 2018 to 24 348 t in 2020. This decline represented a reduction of over 2 000 t in market volume over two years.

From 2020 onward, the market entered a phase of relative stability with minor fluctuations. Volume saw a slight uptick to 24 744 t in 2021, a small decrease to 24 510 t in 2022, and then a more noticeable recovery to 25 574 t in 2023, remaining below the 2018 level.

Montenegro's cheese and curd production showed notable variations in recent years. In 2019, output reached its lowest point at 20,000 tonnes, but rebounded in 2020 to 21,000 tonnes, marking a 4.1% year-over-year increase. The highest production level was recorded earlier, in 2018, at 22,000 tonnes. The most significant annual decline occurred in 2019 with a 9.7% drop, while the largest increase was seen in 2018 at 6.5%.

Export volumes of cheese and curd from Montenegro experienced significant fluctuations during this period. The lowest point came in 2020 with just 1 tonne exported, representing an 83.0% contraction from the previous year. In contrast, exports peaked in 2018 at 6 tonnes. The most substantial growth occurred in 2018 with a 43.4% increase. Overall, the difference between the peak in 2018 and the trough in 2020 was tenfold.

From 2017 through 2020, Serbia, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates remained Montenegro's primary export markets for cheese and curd in volume terms. Serbia accounted for 29.3% of exports, Germany for 27.6%, and the United Arab Emirates for 2.0%. Together, these three markets represented 58.8% of Montenegro's total cheese and curd exports during this period.

The value of cheese and curd exports from Montenegro showed considerable volatility between 2017 and 2020. Exports reached their highest point in 2017 and their lowest in 2020, with a 10.2-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports amounted to just $15,000, representing a dramatic 89.4% decrease compared to 2019. The largest annual increase occurred in 2019 at 0.7%.

Imports cheese and curd to Montenegro

Montenegro's cheese and curd imports declined for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 3,748 tonnes. This represented a substantial 21.9% decrease compared to 2019. Looking at the broader 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 22.4% overall, equivalent to an annualized decline of 8.1%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 4,960 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase at 2.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, Serbia, and Croatia were Montenegro's principal sources of cheese and curd imports by volume. Germany supplied 45.2% of imports, Serbia 29.1%, and Croatia 6.2%. Collectively, these three countries accounted for 80.5% of Montenegro's total cheese and curd imports during this period.

Montenegro's cheese and curd imports by value declined for the second straight year in 2020, amounting to $14,151,000. This reflected a significant 23.1% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the full 2017-2020 period, import values decreased by 21.7%, representing a compound annual decline of 7.8%. The peak import value was recorded in 2018 at $19,012,000, which also saw the largest annual increase at 5.1%.

From 2017 through 2020, Germany, Serbia, and Croatia continued to be Montenegro's main suppliers of cheese and curd by value. Germany accounted for 44.7% of import value, Serbia for 24.6%, and Croatia for 8.1%.
