Earlier Report Observations

The Russian chamois leather market experienced a significant contraction from 2.7 million m² in 2018 to 1.8 million m² in 2020. This decline was accelerated in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted logistics and reduced consumer demand for leather goods.

A slight recovery to 1.9 million m² occurred in 2021, supported by import substitution policies in the garment sector which bolstered demand for domestic and combined leather materials. However, the market collapsed to 1.3 million m² in 2022 following international sanctions, the exit of global brands, and sharp increases in raw material and energy costs, which constrained supply and raised production expenses.

Post-2022, the market stabilized around 1.2 million m², with a minor increase to 1.3 million m² in 2023 before declining to 1.2 million m² in 2024. Domestic production continued its downward trend, falling to 918 thousand m² in 2025.
