Earlier Report Observations
The market for cereal germ in North Macedonia showed considerable fluctuation between 2018 and 2023. Starting from a high of 4 449 t in 2018, market volume dropped sharply to 3 176 t the following year. It partially recovered to 3 527 t by 2021 but then declined again, reaching 3 077 t in 2023.
The contraction in 2023 was driven primarily by the loss of the Russian export market for agricultural products, which severely affected local producers of cereal grains and their by-products. Additionally, strained political relations with Bulgaria reduced cross-border trade and consumer demand in frontier regions.
In 2024, authorities approved a reform program under the Reform and Growth Instrument, aimed at improving the economic environment. The country also continued aligning its legislation with EU requirements and diversifying its agricultural export markets, which could reshape the operating landscape for cereal germ producers.
