Earlier Report Observations

The cereal germ market in Costa Rica grew from 5.7 thousand tons in 2018 to 6.8 thousand tons in 2020. This expansion was supported by the Grain and Seed Research Center (Cigras), which ensured quality standards for grains and seeds under the National Seed Policy, fostering a stable production environment. Additionally, in 2020, a shift in consumer preferences—where lower fruit and vegetable prices led to increased substitution toward cereals—boosted demand for cereal-based products, including cereal germ.

Market volume then contracted to 6.0 thousand tons in 2021 and further to 5.9 thousand tons in 2022. The decline in 2022 was directly linked to a decrease in domestic production of basic grains across the country, which reduced the availability of raw materials for cereal germ processing.

By 2023, the market recovered to 6.3 thousand tons. This rebound aligned with broader industry trends where the cereal category showed resilience, and consumer interest increasingly turned toward functional and healthy food options, as observed in later market analyses.
