A dramatic plunge in demand from 2022 onward, with order books shrinking by approximately 50%, forced significant production cuts and led to the closure of several brickworks, including Danreiter in Upper Austria and Pichler in Aschach/Donau. In response to the downturn and evolving regulations like the expanded CO2 tax, manufacturers focused on innovation, commercializing new segments such as the mineral-filled 'full-value brick' and launching Wienerberger's electrically powered, low-CO2 Porotherm line. Despite these developments, the market size contracted sharply to around 120 million US dollars in 2023-2024, influenced by new CE-marking standards and sustained weak construction sector activity.
