The market volume for fresh cauliflowers and broccoli in the CIS fluctuated considerably between 2018 and 2023. It began at 65 000 tons in 2018, edged down to 63 600 tons in 2019, then contracted sharply to 41 500 tons in 2020. A recovery phase followed, lifting the market to 43 000 tons in 2021, then surging to 58 300 tons in 2022 and reaching 66 000 tons in 2023.

The severe market contraction in 2020 was directly driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted international supply chains and shifted consumer purchasing patterns. The strong rebound in 2022 and 2023 coincided with post-pandemic market stabilization and a pronounced shift in consumer preferences toward healthy eating, which elevated demand for fresh vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower.

Underlying these shifts was a sustained trend of growing interest in broccoli as a more profitable and nutrient-dense crop. This encouraged agricultural producers to expand cultivation, supporting domestic production while import volumes adjusted to meet the recovering demand.

In 2020, production of cauliflowers and broccoli in the CIS remained stable at 42 454 tonnes, showing no significant change from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 7.9%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 2.6%. The largest increase occurred in 2018, at 7.6%, while 2019 saw minimal change.

After two years of growth, the value of cauliflowers and broccoli production in the CIS declined in 2020. Output was valued at 336.7 million US dollars, down by 4.7% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 24.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.6%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 353.2 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 20.3%.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. In 2020, the CIS exported 8 779 tonnes of cauliflowers and broccoli, marking a sharp rise of 243.2% compared to 2019. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 558 tonnes, which also experienced the largest decline of 45.7%. Import levels varied significantly, with a 3.4-fold difference between the high in 2020 and the low in 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine was the primary destination for cauliflowers and broccoli exports from the CIS, accounting for 5.3% of total exports in volume terms.

The value of cauliflowers and broccoli exports from the CIS increased for the third consecutive year in 2020. Export volume reached 10 688 thousand US dollars, up by 25.6% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 113.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 28.8%.

During 2017-2020, Ukraine was the largest market for cauliflowers and broccoli exports from the CIS in value terms, representing 4.7% of total export flows.

Import volume was recorded at 7 794 tonnes, a sharp decrease of 67.3% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 68.8%, with a compound annual decline rate of 32.2%. The highest import volume was in 2018 at 27 359 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 9.5%.

The partner structure for imports in volume terms from 2017 to 2020 was fragmented. Iran accounted for 17.6% of imports, China for 14.8%, and Turkey for 2.9%, with these three countries together making up only 35.3% of total flows. No single country held a dominant share.

In 2020, the CIS imported cauliflowers and broccoli valued at 19 551 thousand US dollars, reflecting a decline of 45.7% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 45.7%, with a compound annual decline rate of 18.4%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 36 033 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 1.6%.

Iran accounted for 23.6% of imports, China for 19.0%, and Lebanon for 3.8%, with these three countries together representing only 46.3% of total flows.
