The market experienced a severe contraction in 2022, when adverse weather conditions led to the lowest yield in ten years for open-field carrots in Italy. This supply shock drove up prices and contributed to a 5% drop in domestic fresh consumption, reducing the total market volume to 286 thousand tons. The following year, a rebound in European vegetable production, including carrots, and growing investment in advanced processing technologies helped the Italian market recover to 355 thousand tons.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom were the leading destinations for Italy's carrot and turnip exports by volume. Germany accounted for 31.8% of exports, France for 10.5%, and the United Kingdom for 8.8%. Together, these three countries represented 51.1% of total export flows.
