The carbon market in Slovakia contracted overall from 75.4 thousand tons in 2018 to 41.7 thousand tons in 2024. Following a drop to 60.4 thousand tons in 2020, market volume recovered to 69.8 thousand tons in 2021 before declining again in subsequent years.

Domestic production fell sharply throughout the period, from 1.2 thousand tons in 2018 to just 0.2 thousand tons in 2024. Imports, which form the primary supply source, also decreased from 125.1 thousand tons to 57.8 thousand tons. In 2022, global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions affected raw material availability and costs, contributing to lower production and stagnant import levels. At the same time, growing worldwide demand for carbon products in electric vehicles and energy storage applications supported higher exports, further reducing the volume available for domestic consumption.

By 2024, the market size had fallen to 41.7 thousand tons, reflecting minimal local production, reduced import flows, and lower overall consumption.

Slovakia's production of carbon excluding graphite or diamonds declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 667 tonnes, marking a 23.4% year-over-year decrease. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 29.5%, which translates to an average annual decline of 11.0%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 182 tonnes. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, with a 26.4% decrease, while the largest increase was seen in 2018, rising by 25.0%.

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2018, with a 27-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Slovakia exported 22.3 thousand tonnes of carbon excluding graphite or diamonds, showing a sharp decline of 34.2% compared to 2019. The maximum export volume was recorded in 2018 at 50.8 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 2 623.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, Czechia, and Austria were the primary markets for Slovakia's exports in kind. Italy accounted for 34.6% of exports, Czechia for 27.5%, and Austria for 17.5%. Together, these three countries represented 79.6% of total export flows.
