The Egyptian market for fresh or chilled capsicum and pimenta fruits expanded sharply from 730 thousand tons in 2018 to 954 thousand tons in 2019, a 30% increase. This growth was primarily driven by rising demand for Egyptian hot peppers, which encouraged agricultural investors to expand cultivation areas. The earlier registration of new pepper varieties also helped strengthen the foundation for local production.

After the 2019 peak, market volume contracted to 864 thousand tons in 2020 and further to 720 thousand tons in 2021. However, a strong recovery followed in 2022, with volume surging 58% to 1 139 thousand tons, setting a new high for the period.

In 2023, the market saw a modest adjustment to 1 090 thousand tons, remaining at an elevated level. The adoption of modern farming techniques in areas like Minya, which converted low-yield land into productive acreage for green and red peppers, helped sustain domestic output.

Egypt's production of capsicum and pimenta fruits saw a two-year rise before declining. In 2020, the country produced 867.0 K t, marking a 9.3% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, overall production grew by 28.2%, averaging an 8.6% annual increase. The peak was in 2019 at 956.3 K t, with the largest annual growth of 30.5% also occurring that year.

Following two years of growth, the value of capsicum and pimenta fruits production in Egypt fell. In 2020, output was valued at 1 619 M $ US, down 1.5% from 2019. Exports capsicum and pimenta fruits from Egypt

After two years of decline, Egypt's exports of capsicum and pimenta fruits in volume rebounded. In 2020, exports reached 2 738 t, a 20.6% increase from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, export volumes decreased by 4.1%, with an average annual decline of 1.4%. The lowest point was in 2019 at 2 271 t, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2018 at 15.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Saudi Arabia, Hungary, and Russia remained the primary buyers of capsicum and pimenta fruits from Egypt, accounting for 36.8%, 20.0%, and 14.5% of export volumes, respectively. Together, these three countries made up 71.3% of Egypt's total exports in kind.

Following a two-year downturn, Egypt's export value of capsicum and pimenta fruits recovered. In 2020, exports totaled 5 115 K $ US, surging 31.0% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value rose by 2.2%, with an average annual growth of 0.7%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 3 905 K $ US, and the most significant decline happened in 2018 at 12.1%.

During 2017-2020, Saudi Arabia, Hungary, and Russia were the leading destinations for Egypt's capsicum and pimenta fruits exports by value, with shares of 36.8%, 19.9%, and 14.4%, respectively. Combined, these markets represented 71.1% of Egypt's total export value.
