The market for canary seeds in South-eastern Asia shrank from 54 435 metric tons in 2018 to 45 277 metric tons in 2023. This decline was driven primarily by a sharp drop in imports, which fell by over 60% across the period, while domestic production remained stable at around 37 000 metric tons annually.

Import volumes fluctuated in response to changes in international prices and regional consumption. In 2021, a temporary easing of import prices contributed to a rebound in shipments, lifting the overall market size. The following year, import prices peaked, putting downward pressure on import demand. By 2024, decreased consumption in Indonesia, a key market within the region, led to a further contraction in imports to 6 322 metric tons.

Throughout the period, local production showed remarkable stability, with annual output varying by less than 0.5%. This consistency offset some of the import decline but was insufficient to prevent the overall market contraction.
