Between 2018 and 2019, the Irish market for calcareous building stone expanded in volume, with production and total market size growing to over 41,000 tonnes. However, this upward trend reversed sharply in 2021, when domestic production collapsed to under 5,000 tonnes. This drop was partially offset by a surge in imports, which exceeded 8,600 tonnes that year, altering the supply structure of the market.

The market's value followed a different path, remaining relatively stable and even increasing in 2021 to 5.2 million dollars despite the lower physical volume. This indicates a shift towards higher-value stone, likely sourced from imports, which commanded a significantly higher average price per tonne compared to the preceding years.

By 2022, the market volume continued to contract, falling to approximately 11,600 tonnes. Domestic production showed a slight recovery, while import volumes decreased from their 2021 peak. The market value stabilized just above 5.1 million dollars, suggesting a consolidation at a new equilibrium with a higher reliance on imported material.
