Earlier Report Observations

After a period of modest economic recovery in 2018 supported the regional agricultural market, the cabbage market in Latin America and the Caribbean began to contract. Increasing poverty and inequality in 2019 reduced domestic purchasing power and demand, contributing to a decline in market size from 873 thousand tons to 810 thousand tons, with the downward trend continuing into 2020.

From 2021 onward, the regional push for agricultural biotechnology and precision agriculture aimed at modernizing and making farming more sustainable enhanced productivity and export competitiveness. This supported steady growth in cabbage production but also fueled a significant rise in exports, which further reduced the domestic market volume to 724 thousand tons in 2021 and a low of 640 thousand tons in 2022.

In 2023, despite persistent structural challenges such as inequality and low economic growth, the market recovered to 800 thousand tons, primarily due to a sharp reduction in export volumes alongside stable production. By 2024, the ongoing digitization of agribusiness and strengthened regional cooperation, notably led by Brazil, were associated with a major surge in import volumes, indicating a shift in trade dynamics.
