Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, cabbage production in Bangladesh rose from 321.7 thousand tons to 331.0 thousand tons, with market volume expanding similarly. This growth was supported by the spread of off-season cultivation, which made winter vegetables like cabbage available year-round and helped meet rising consumer demand. Reports noted that despite supply shortages ahead of the winter season, strong demand and higher prices encouraged farmers to maintain output.

The market saw a sharp jump in 2020, with production reaching 384.3 thousand tons and market volume climbing to 383.8 thousand tons. The COVID-19 lockdown disrupted supply chains, but steady demand for essential vegetables likely prompted local growers to ramp up production. In the following year, increased off-season cultivation led to a larger supply, which pushed retail prices down and enabled a rise in exports. Consequently, even though production dipped slightly to 380.3 thousand tons, the domestic market volume fell to 371.6 thousand tons as more cabbage was shipped abroad.

Production rebounded to 395.0 thousand tons in 2022, and market volume grew to 389.6 thousand tons. Seasonal temperature drops and regional supply improvements, along with short-term festival demand during Lakshmi Puja, supported this recovery. The upward trend continued in 2023, with production hitting 422.3 thousand tons and market volume reaching 420.2 thousand tons, marking a steady expansion of the cabbage sector.
