The market for butter, dairy spreads, and milk fats in Myanmar expanded from 98.0 thousand tons in 2018 to 102.3 thousand tons in 2019. This growth was supported by dairy sector development initiatives, including the Myanmar Dairy Excellence Project which aimed to improve dairy cattle breeding and increase milk production with higher fat content. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation drafted an Agricultural Development Strategy, and the establishment of the Myanmar Dairy Association helped support farmers and expand the industry.

In 2020, market volume dropped sharply to 36.2 thousand tons, then stabilized around 36 thousand tons through 2021 to 2023. Production also fell from over 100 thousand tons to approximately 35 thousand tons, indicating a significant shift in supply.

In 2022, the Myanmar Food and Drug Authority introduced new labeling requirements for prepacked foodstuffs, including dairy products, enhancing consumer information standards. Additionally, tightened import regulations for edible oils and fluctuations in global supply chains influenced the fats market dynamics, although overall consumption volume remained steady.

In 2020, Myanmar produced 35 293 tonnes of butter, dairy spreads, and milk fats, marking a sharp 65.2% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, production fell by 63.6%, averaging an annual decline of 28.6%. The peak was in 2019, with 101 314 tonnes, which also saw the largest yearly increase at 4.5%.

Myanmar's imports of butter, dairy spreads, and milk fats fell for the third year in a row. In 2020, imports totaled 887 tonnes, down 11.5% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports dropped by 42.9%, with an average annual decrease of 17.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, New Zealand and Malaysia were the dominant sources for Myanmar's imports in volume, together accounting for 86.0% of the total, while other countries contributed smaller shares.

Myanmar's imports of butter, dairy spreads, and milk fats in value terms declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 3 620 thousand US dollars, a significant 10.6% decrease from the year before. Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 23.7%, averaging an 8.6% annual decline.
