Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, the buckwheat market volume in Asia grew from 679 thousand tons to 818.5 thousand tons, despite a decline to 640.2 thousand tons in 2020. This expansion was influenced by trade policy adjustments in a key producing country. Russia's temporary ban on buckwheat exports in 2021 redirected supplies, while a subsequent surge in Russian exports to China in 2023 supported higher regional import volumes.

Buckwheat production in Asia remained between 605 and 659 thousand tons, peaking in 2022, a period characterized by high harvests and saturated stocks in Russia. Imports into Asia rose sharply to 187.3 thousand tons in 2023 and further to 278.8 thousand tons in 2024, coinciding with record Russian export volumes even as the country reported a reduction in sown area for the crop.
