The market volume for broken rice in South-eastern Asia showed considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. After starting at 14.0 million tons in 2018, it dipped slightly the following year before contracting sharply to 8.7 million tons in 2020. The market partially recovered to 10.5 million tons in 2021 but faced another decline in 2022, ending the period at 10.0 million tons in 2023, still below the pre-2020 level.

In value terms, the market followed a similar trajectory but with a notable divergence in 2023. The market value dropped from $5.6 billion in 2018 to a low of $3.9 billion in 2022. However, in 2023, it rebounded strongly to $5.3 billion, a 32% increase from the previous year, significantly outpacing the modest 3% growth in physical volume, indicating a substantial rise in unit prices.

Broken rice production in South-eastern Asia has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 10,375 thousand tonnes of broken rice, which represents a sharp 28.0% decrease compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 26.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of -9.6%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 15,366 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 9.2%.

Exports broken rice from South-eastern Asia
