The bread market in Hong Kong saw significant volume fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After beginning the period at 52 661 t, the market contracted over two years to a low of 42 104 t in 2020. A sustained recovery then followed, driving the market volume to 66 031 t by 2023, which represented a notable increase above the starting point.

This trajectory was largely shaped by changes in international trade, as domestic production remained minimal and stable at under 500 t per year. Imports, which form the overwhelming majority of supply, dropped from 78 437 t in 2018 to 68 266 t in 2020 before rebounding strongly to 85 806 t in 2023. Concurrently, export volumes varied, with a sharp decline after 2021 contributing to greater net availability for the local market.

Hong Kong's bread production declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 445.0 t, representing a 5.5% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 18%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.7%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 486.7 t, which also saw the largest annual increase of 29.0%.

After two years of growth, bread exports from Hong Kong declined. In 2020, Hong Kong exported 26 607 t of bread, a decrease of 3.1% compared to 2019.
