Earlier Report Observations

The domestic market volume for bran and residues in Tanzania contracted from 494 thousand tons in 2018 to 368 thousand tons in 2020, primarily due to a sharp rise in exports to neighboring countries like Kenya, driven by regional demand for animal feed. While production increased in 2019, the surge in overseas shipments reduced local availability. Supply chain disruptions from weather and pest issues further constrained production in 2020, exacerbating the decline.

From 2021, market volume recovered, reaching 432 thousand tons in 2023, as government seed and fertilizer subsidies boosted cereal output, expanding bran supply. Exports remained high but stable, supported by ongoing regional demand. Concurrently, concerns over pesticide residues in maize bran influenced domestic consumer behavior, adding pressure on the local market throughout the period.
