This growth was propelled by a dramatic increase in imports, which jumped from 352 thousand tonnes in 2020 to 1.18 million tonnes in 2021. Domestic production also contributed, growing steadily from 1.88 million tonnes to 2.11 million tonnes over the same period.

Following the 2021 peak, market volume stabilized near 3.16 million tonnes in 2022 before declining to 2.77 million tonnes in 2023. The contraction was linked to a sharp fall in imports, which dropped to 776 thousand tonnes in 2023. Throughout this period, export volumes remained low and stable, while domestic production held above 2.09 million tonnes.
