Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for beet pulp and sugar-manufacture waste in Germany experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2024. Starting at 2.61 million tons in 2018, it declined over the next two years to 2.14 million tons in 2020, then gradually recovered to 2.36 million tons by 2022. However, 2023 saw a sharp contraction to 1.81 million tons, before a strong rebound in 2024 brought the market to 2.47 million tons.

The recovery in 2024 was primarily driven by record sugar beet production, which reached 36.7 million tons in the 2023/24 season, significantly increasing the availability of processing by-products like beet pulp and bagasse. This surge in raw material supply supported higher output from Germany's sugar refineries. Concurrently, the industry has been adapting to a declining number of beet growers and increasing energy costs, while regulatory measures such as the new harvest certification requirement introduced in July 2024 have added further structure to the market.
